frequently asked questions

How do I get started?
Getting started is easy! Simply fill out the contact form and provide some information about your dog and training goals. From there, we'll schedule a one-hour consultation where we'll meet, evaluate your dog's behavior and needs, discuss your goals, and create a customized training plan.
How much does training cost?
Initial consultations, 30-minute sessions, 1-hour sessions, and training packages are also available for clients looking for a more comprehensive training program. Please inquire for pricing.
Where do training sessions take place?
We come to you! Training sessions can take place in your home, at local parks, or in public settings depending on your dog's needs and training goals. Some dogs benefit from starting at home before progressing into more distracting environments.
What areas do you serve?
House of the Hound is based in Canton, Georgia and serves surrounding areas throughout North Metro Atlanta. Travel fees may apply outside of the immediate service area.
What should I have ready for my training session?
Please have your dog on a secure leash and collar or harness. Bring a variety of small, high-value treats and a favorite toy if your dog enjoys toys as a reward. Water is recommended for outdoor sessions. (I will also provide treats if you are unsure on what treats your dog will enjoy)
What training methods do you use?
I utilize a balanced training approach that incorporates positive reinforcement, clear communication, consistency, and structure. Every dog is unique, and training methods are tailored to the individual dog, their temperament, and their goals.
Do you work with puppies?
Absolutely! Puppy training focuses on potty training, crate training, confidence building, proper environmental socialization, engagement, manners, and creating a strong foundation for future training success.
Do you work with reactive or aggressive dogs?
Yes. I work with dogs experiencing reactivity, fear, anxiety, and aggression toward people, dogs, or environmental triggers. Each case is evaluated individually, and safety is always our top priority.
My dog is fearful or anxious. Can you help?
Yes. Many behavioral issues stem from fear, anxiety, or a lack of confidence. Environmental confidence training helps dogs learn how to navigate the world calmly and successfully.
Is my dog too old to train?
Not at all! Dogs can learn at any age. Whether you have a young puppy or a senior dog, training can improve communication, confidence, the bond you have with your dog, and quality of life.
How many sessions will my dog need?
Every dog is different. The number of recommended sessions depends on your goals, your dog's age and temperament, the severity of behavioral concerns, and the consistency of training between sessions.
Will my family be involved in training?
Yes! Training is most successful when everyone involved with the dog follows the same rules, expectations, and training techniques. Family participation is highly encouraged.
Do you offer AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluations?
Yes. As an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator, I can help prepare dogs for the CGC test and evaluate eligible dogs. Please inquire for more information.
What is the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test?
The CGC program evaluates a dog's ability to demonstrate good manners and responsible behavior in everyday situations. Skills include polite greetings, walking on a loose leash, remaining calm around distractions, supervised separation, and more.
Do you certify therapy dogs?
No. I provide therapy dog preparation and foundational training, but I do not certify therapy dogs. Dogs must be evaluated and certified through a recognized therapy dog organization of your choosing.
What equipment will my dog need?
Equipment recommendations vary depending on your dog's age, behavior, and training goals. Recommendations will be discussed during your consultation. Please avoid purchasing specialized training equipment before speaking with your trainer.
Do you guarantee results?
No ethical trainer can guarantee specific results. Training success depends on factors such as consistency, owner participation, environment, genetics, and individual temperament. My goal is to provide you with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to achieve lasting success.
Will I need to complete any paperwork before training begins?
Yes. Prior to your first training session, you'll be asked to complete a client agreement and liability waiver. This paperwork helps ensure that important information regarding your dog's health, behavior history, training goals, and safety considerations is documented so we can provide the best possible training experience for you and your dog.
What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?
A minimum of 24 hours notice is requested for cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments canceled with insufficient notice may be subject to a cancellation fee.
Can training help strengthen my bond with my dog?
Absolutely. Training is about much more than commands.... it's about communication, trust, confidence, and building a stronger relationship between you and your dog!
